A comprehensive approach to a Net Zero starts with an accurate baseline.

Organisational Carbon Footprint Case Study: Architectural Aluminium Coatings (AAC) Ltd.’s Journey to Carbon Neutrality

Introduction: Architectural Aluminium Coatings (AAC) Ltd. is a company specializing in architectural coatings for aluminum surfaces. They provide a range of services related to the treatment and enhancement of aluminum products used in the construction industry. AAC recognized the importance of addressing its carbon footprint and embarked on a comprehensive journey towards carbon neutrality, including the development of a Greenhouse Gas Inventory, a Carbon Reduction Plan, and eventual Carbon Neutral Certification.

Rationale for Carbon Neutrality: AAC’s commitment to carbon neutrality was driven by its dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainability. The company recognized the importance of aligning its operations with international standards and best practices. AAC chose to adhere to the WRI Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Reporting and Accounting Standard, ensuring comprehensive coverage of emissions, including Scope 1, Scope 2, and selected Scope 3 emissions.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory Process: To kickstart this journey, AAC engaged Blue Marble to compile and develop their Greenhouse Gas Inventory and corresponding GHG Report. This meticulous process adhered to the requirements of ISO 14064-1 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Reporting and Accounting Standard. Emissions factors utilized in the report were sourced primarily from the UK Government Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, ensuring data accuracy and reliability.

Emissions Breakdown: The Greenhouse Gas Inventory revealed the following emissions breakdown for AAC:

  • Scope 1 emissions: 1,108 tonnes CO2e, primarily attributed to on-site gaseous fuel usage.
  • Scope 2 emissions: 201.5 tonnes CO2e, entirely associated with electricity supplied to factory facilities.
  • Scope 3 emissions: 445 tonnes CO2e, with the majority linked to upstream transportation and distribution.

The total carbon emissions for AAC amounted to 1,754.5 tonnes CO2e.

Offsetting Program: In alignment with their commitment to carbon neutrality, AAC decided to invest in the Eglence I-II Hydroelectric Power Plant project located in Turkey. This project adheres to the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and offsets a volume of 1,755 tonnes of CO2e. By participating in this initiative, AAC actively contributed to emissions reduction and sustainable energy generation.

Carbon Neutrality Achievement: Architectural Aluminium Coatings Ltd. successfully achieved carbon neutrality for its global operations. This remarkable achievement was certified by Blue Marble in August 2023, for the reporting period commencing on April 1st, 2022, and ending on March 31st, 2023.

Conclusion: AAC’s journey towards carbon neutrality exemplifies their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability within the construction industry. By addressing emissions across their entire value chain and investing in clean energy projects, AAC demonstrates leadership and sets a positive example for the industry. This case study serves as an illustration of how companies can take proactive measures to mitigate their environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future for the planet.
