LCA Comparing Nappy Waste Recycling Process with Landfill and Incineration Scenarios
DiaperRecycle is a start-up nappy recycling business based in Melbourne. Their recycling process involves diverting waste disposable nappies from landfills and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions while joining the circular economy and recycling a waste consumer product into other products.
In 2022, DiaperRecycle commissioned Blue Marble to conduct a streamlined LCA for a notional nappy recycling facility in the UK. The study involved modelling DiaperRecycle’s process including inputs (nappies), process (chiefly energy and some chemicals) and outputs (a cat litter product and recyclable plastics). The DiaperRecycle process was contrasted with sending the same weight of nappies to landfill and to be incinerated. The results of the study revealed that the DiaperRecycle process emits 80.6% less carbon than sending nappies to landfill and 82% less than incineration.
Blue Marble was able to produce a cost-effective streamlined LCA which not only validated the environmental credentials of DiaperRecycle at home, but also supported their efforts to expand into overseas markets including across the UK.
