Calculating a ‘Project Carbon Footprint’ from an Inventory of Items Specified for a House Renovation Project

Studio Hooton is an interior design studio based in Winchester and London. In 2022, Studio Hooton commissioned Blue Marble to conduct a project carbon footprint study on their work on a private family residence in Hampshire.
The ‘project’ carbon footprint study applied many of the principles of building Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) but focused on embodied carbon in the product stages including interior design, furniture, joinery, decoration and tiling. The work carried out by Blue Marble involved modelling the carbon footprint of over 360 items and materials specified by Studio Hooton on the project.
This innovative approach to carbon footprint reporting at the project level was designed to complement building LCAs with more bespoke and targeted carbon accounting, specific to interior design.
Based on the carbon footprint calculated, Studio Hooton intends to offer clients the opportunity to offset project emissions using verified offsets to create a carbon neutral projects.
Additionally, Blue Marble’s carbon footprint report identified the carbon hotspots in the project, providing Studio Hooton with the data required to work with suppliers to reduce carbon impact on future projects.
